Viral social media claims that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) headquarters in Abuja was engulfed in fire and trillions of naira destroyed have been debunked. Authorities confirm that the reports are false, and the CBN building remains fully operational and unaffected.
The actual fire occurred at the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) office in Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, affecting part of the fourth floor. Emergency responders, including the FCT Fire Service, acted swiftly to contain the blaze, preventing it from spreading further. Thankfully, no casualties were recorded.
FIRS management stated that some offices sustained damage, and preliminary investigations indicate that the fire may have been caused by an electrical fault. Officials are reviewing safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The CBN has released no reports of any fire at its headquarters, and credible news outlets have confirmed that the viral claims circulating online are misinformation.
Authorities urge the public to verify information from official sources before sharing unconfirmed news, especially on social media, to prevent panic and the spread of false narratives.
