Canadian MP Charges Nigerian Counterparts to Tackle Insecurity, Development Issues, Through Legislation

The Canadian government has expressed deep concern about insecurity in Nigeria.

Receiving a delegation of the Conference of Nigerian Speakers of State Houses of Assembly on tour of Canada who paid him a courtesy visit in Ottawa on Tuesday, a Member of Parliament, MP, representing Don Valley West, Ontario Province, Robert Oliphant, described as fruitful, his engagement with his visitors on how to deepen bilateral relationships in the areas of job creation, security, and youth restiveness.

Oliphant, who doubles as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, charged the lawmakers, to, through the instrumentality of legislation, address these issues.

In his remarks, leader of the delegation, Suleiman Abubakar, thanked his Canadian counterpart for the warm reception since their arrival in the country.

Abubakar, who is speaker, Bauchi State House of Assembly, appreciated the rich interactive sessions with seasoned resource persons at the Institute on Governance, University of Ottawa.

Abubakar told the MP that members of the delegation had learnt a lot about Canada, and have lots of takeaways to share with their colleagues back home.

He further assured the MP of the State Legislatures’ readiness to further collaborate with the Canadian government in the area of good governance which, he believed to be the panacea for the country’s underdevelopment.
