The Rivers State branch of the Nigerian Institute of Architects, NIA, has expressed concern over the increasing spate of building collapse in Port Harcourt, the state capital and its environs.
Reacting to the recent collapse of a three-Storey building under construction at Iriebe in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state, the Chairman of NIA in Rivers State, Toku Fiberesima, attributed the building collapse to the failure of government agencies in the building sector to engage the services of qualified professionals in the sector.
While expressing sympathy with the victims of the Iriebe building collapse, Fiberesima, said the disaster could have been averted if professional architects and builders were involved in the building project.
The NIA Chairman condemned the lack of the use of professional architects and builders in the development of Port Harcourt and its environs. “This negligence has led to the collapse of buildings, putting lives of citizens at risk as seen in the recent incident at Iriebe, which unfortunately took some lives,” he said.
NIA is a policy making body for architects in Nigeria. It exists to promote the practice of architecture and foster friendship among its more than 4,000 members spread across 32 chapters in Nigeria. Its primary aim is to ensure safe and sustainable building practices.
Fiberesima stressed the importance of engaging qualified professionals in building projects, town planning and urban development to prevent structural failures and protect lives.
The NIA Chairman, who also advocated for strict adherence to architectural standards and regulations, called for collaboration among architects, builders and government agencies.
He said lack of expertise, prevalence of quacks and non-involvement of professional architects and builders in the city’s development were the major causes of building collapses in Port Harcourt.
He also called for greater compliance with architectural standards, creation of awareness and education of the people on the importance of safe and sustainable building practices.
“By addressing these concerns and implementing recommended actions, NIA, Rivers State aims to ensure a safer and more sustainable built environment for all citizens,” he said.
