Police Recover About 35m, Four Cars, Arrest One Suspect

Breakthrough in Uromi Bank Robbery Saga

There has been a breakthrough in the multiple bank robberies in Uromi, Edo State as barely 24 hours after, the state police command announced the recovery of over 34m looted by the robbers, four vehicles, and two motorcycles believed to have been abandoned. The casualty figure on Friday rose to eight from the initial seven, comprising six civilians and two policemen.

Youths of Ubiaja reportedly facilitated the recovery of the items as they were said to have barricaded the road leading to their community on getting information that the fleeing robbers were headed in that direction to make good their escape. The cars containing the stolen cash were said to have been abandoned near the railway on the road to Ubiaja as they were intercepted by the youths.

According to a press statement by the Police Public Relations Officer of the state police command, Bello Kontongs, a superintendent of police, SP, Friday night, a combined team of police and vigilante group evacuated the abandoned items to the police station.
The statement reads: “Today 25/02/2022 at about 0730, Operatives of the Edo State police command in conjunction with local Vigilantes, accompanied by Chief John Odijie, the Oniha of Ubiaja, led by the DPO Ubiaja, acting on credible information that some vehicles suspected to have been used by armed robbers in Uromi Bank Robbery Operations on the 24/02 /2022 were seen hidden in Oruen Quarters Bush of Ubiaja in Esan South East Local Government Area of Edo State.

“On receipt of the information, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Ubiaja mobilized his men who during the bank robbery operations blocked all the exit routes from in and out of Uromi town, together with the team immediately mobilize to the location and recovered the following vehicles and items: One Red Colour Camry car with Reg. No. EZA 105 KJA, One ash Colour Camry Car with Reg. No. KWL 19 DU, One Dark Ash colour corolla car with Reg. No. UBJ 734 SZ, One Lexus 330 car with Reg. No. AAA 973 FL, One Red Q. Link M/CYCLE With Reg. No. EZA 105 QN, One Red Day Long M/Cycle With Reg. No. ENU 204 QL, Two small bags containing women Items, one Union Bank ATM card and Cash Sum Thirty four million, five hundred and ten thousand Naira only ( 34,510,000.00).

An indication of a breakthrough in the case emerged earlier in the day via a post on the Edo Police Command Press Interactive WhatsApp platform which reads: Breaking News
“Thankfully our ubiaja youths were able to block Ubiaja Road by the rail line, which forced the robbers to abandon their cash ladden vehicles off the rail line and flee in motorcycles. The vehicles and cash have been recovered and counting still ongoing at the Ubiaja police station. An arrest has also been made. God will reveal all the perpetrators. The blood of the innocent Will hunt them down”.One of the vehicles, shown in a viral video of the robbery, into which sacks of cash from the affected banks were being loaded, a red Toyota Camry car with registration number, MK 23 KJA, was posted on the platform.

Recall that the speaker of the state House of Assembly, Marcus Onobun, had on Friday morning expressed confidence that the bandits would be tracked down and brought to book. Onobun, who was guest on TVC News breakfast talk show, ‘Your View’, He said it was comforting that there were pictorial and video evidences showing what actually transpired. According to him, “I want to believe, with what we have in place, the security architecture that had been set up by the state, even though the incident has happened, it’s unfortunate. But we would be able to track these people down as well as bringing them to justice”.

Similarly, the state Commissioner of Police, Philip Aliyu Ogbadu, who sympathised with the families of those who lost their lives in the unfortunate incident, had also promised not to relent until all those behind the attack “are bought to face the full wrath of the law.”
