The Iyaloja-General of Nigeria, Chief Dr. Mujidat Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, on Wednesday visited Mandillas Market, Lagos Island, to inspect the aftermath of the recent inferno that gutted several plazas and left traders counting huge losses.
During the on-site assessment, Chief Tinubu-Ojo met with market leaders overseeing the affected sections. While the exact cause of the fire remains unconfirmed, many traders suspect it was triggered by a power generator surge.
Market leaders appealed for stricter regulations against mounting generators on upper floors of high-rise buildings, warning that such unsafe practices make fires harder to control and more destructive.
Speaking at the scene, Chief Folasade Tinubu-Ojo sympathized deeply with the affected traders and condemned the reckless installation of heavy-duty and portable generators above ground level.
“Generators should never be installed on any floor above ground level. If centralized power centers cannot be built, market operators must ensure generators are safely placed on the ground floor to prevent avoidable disasters,” she emphasized.
