Global R&B icon Akon is facing one of the most personal challenges of his career as his wife, Tomeka Thiam, has officially filed for divorce after nearly 29 years of marriage.

According to court documents obtained by People Magazine, Tomeka filed the petition on September 11, 2025, citing irreconcilable differences. The couple, who married in September 1996, share a 17-year-old daughter, Journey Thiam.

In her filing, Tomeka requested joint legal custody of their daughter but asked for primary physical custody and spousal support, while requesting that Akon be denied any financial support from her. The official date of separation was listed as “to be determined.”

Neither Akon nor his representatives have made any public statement regarding the divorce.
