Wole Soyinka Center Trains Journalists On Reporting Women

The Wole Soyinka Centre For Investigative Journalism, WSCIJ has trained 21 Journalists and Civil Society Organizations, CSOs on reporting women.

The program titled, ‘Report Women: Make it Happen,’ was held on Friday at the centre’s office on Awolowo Way, Ikeja, Lagos State as part of its effort to expose media practitioners and women advocates to issues affecting womanhood.

The WSCIJ has trained about 83 Journalists across the country including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja within the last six years while, it has also provided grants to some reporters to execute stories on investigative reporting.

Within this period, Abiose Adams-Adelaja, Isioma Madike, Olutosin Olafosu-Adebowale, Bamgbose Temiloluwa and Simon Ateba were all sponsored by the centre to investigate and report stories ranging from Female Genital Mutilation to humiliation of widows and human traffic.

They all took turns to discuss their experiences with the participants at the session on Friday.

Training the participants on a topic titled, “Make It Happen – The WSCIJ experience,” Motunrayo Alaka, Coordinator of the centre, took the reporters on reporting critical issues including child marriage, education, abuse, rape and education.

She urged participants to give much attention to the vulnerable in the society in order to place Nigeria at par with other Nordic countries that have succeeded in the campaigning against victimization of women and girls.

Participants at the training were divided for group discussion and presentation on areas bothering on improving deliberate mainstreaming of girls and women while reporting.

Speaking on behalf of participants at the end of the program, Madike thanked the WSCIJ for equipping reporters with the skills and training needed for effective coverage of the women-folk.
