In a dramatic turn of events, the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, citing allegations of statutory and financial misconduct. The lawmakers accused Obasa of multiple infractions, including the controversial withdrawal of ₦43.5 billion purportedly for backup vehicles for members and other questionable expenditures.

Following his impeachment, Obasa’s deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, was sworn in as the new Speaker. Mrs. Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency 1, previously served as the Chief Whip of the House. The impeachment occurred while Obasa, 52, was reportedly in Atlanta, United States.

His tenure as Speaker, which began on June 8, 2015, during former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration, has been mired in controversies, including allegations of fraud and political thuggery. The decision by the Assembly marks a significant shift in Lagos State’s political landscape, raising questions about accountability and transparency within the state’s leadership.
Further details are expected as the situation unfolds.
