A viral video from Ikorodu has sparked widespread debate about Lagos’ worsening public transport challenges after a commuter filmed massive early-morning queues at a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) terminal, declaring that “waking up early is useless in Lagos.”

The emotional clip, posted on X by user @Teeniiola (TENIOLA), shows hundreds of commuters crowding a BRT platform in Ikorodu before sunrise, waiting desperately for buses that appear far too few for the overwhelming demand.

In the video, the young woman pleads with the Lagos State Government to intervene, saying commuters regularly wait more than two hours before boarding a bus.

“Please do something about this situation,” she says in the recording. “The BRT buses in Ikorodu are not enough. People queue for hours because there are simply not enough buses to carry everyone.”

The footage captures a dense line of commuters stretching along the terminal, many visibly anxious about getting to work on time. A caption later in the clip reading “1 hour later” shows the queue barely moving, prompting the frustrated commuter to exclaim: “So what time am I going to get to work? Provide buses for us!”

The video has quickly gained traction online, attracting thousands of views and sparking a wave of reactions from Lagos residents who say the experience mirrors their daily commute.

One social media user, @Dontee___, shared a similar ordeal commuting from Ikorodu to Victoria Island:

“I was like this for three years… leaving home by 5am, standing in queue till 7am or sometimes 8am before a BRT arrives. Then getting home around 10 or 11pm.”

Several commenters linked the persistent shortage of buses to the destruction of dozens of vehicles during the nationwide protests associated with the #EndSARS protests.

The renewed outcry comes just days after the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority implemented a 13 percent fare increase across BRT and standard bus routes effective March 2, 2026.

The adjustment was approved by Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos State, as part of efforts to offset rising operational costs including fuel prices, maintenance expenses, and inflation pressures.

For many residents, the combination of rising fares and long waiting times has intensified frustration.

The Bus Rapid Transit system, originally introduced to ease congestion and provide affordable mass transit, is widely used along major corridors including Ikorodu, Mile 12, and the Lagos Island axis. However, commuters say persistent problems such as bus breakdowns, fuel shortages, occasional fires, and chaotic boarding systems continue to disrupt operations.

Transport observers also point out that the Ikorodu corridor experiences particularly heavy demand due to its dense population and limited alternative transport options.

Some analysts argue that simply adding more buses may not fully solve the problem without complementary improvements to road infrastructure and dedicated transit lanes.

One online commenter noted that the challenge extends beyond fleet size, questioning whether existing road networks and lanes can effectively handle additional BRT vehicles in the Ikorodu area.

As the population of Lagos continues to grow rapidly, urban planners say the city must accelerate investments in integrated transportation solutions, including expanded bus fleets, better traffic management, and rail alternatives.

At the time of filing this report, neither Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority nor the Lagos State Government had issued an official response to the specific viral video.

For thousands of commuters battling the early-morning queues daily, however, the message behind the viral clip is clear: transport frustration in Lagos is reaching a breaking point.
