The incoming political party in Edo State, the All-Progressives Congress, has called out the outgoing governor, Godwin Obaseki for allegedly taking hurried actions and decisions that could hamper a smooth takeoff of the Senator Monday Okpebholo’s government and set the stage for industrial disharmony in the state.

The APC in a statement on Friday, raised the alarm that Governor Obaseki had been filling the civil service with hundreds of new personnel, most of them his personal aides, jettisoning civil service rules in recruitment of staff.

The party, in a statement titled “Public Notice on The Last Minute Plan By The Outgoing Governor Godwin Obaseki To Cause Dissatisfaction in Edo State and Scuttle The Incoming Administration of Senator Monday Okpebholo”, its acting state chairman, Jarret Tenebe, also alleged that the governor had set machinery in motion to raise minimum wage to ₦85, 000 despite the fact that he had not fully implemented the present ₦70, 000.

The APC accused the outgoing governor of hurriedly commissioning uncompleted projects to justify their inflated costs.

Tenebe said the party was putting the people of Edo State on notice because Obaseki’s action was a violation of his oath of office and economic sabotage.

The statement reads:

“Our party, the All-Progressives Congress, (APC) has been inundated with reports of last- minute decisions taken by the outgoing administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki.
“We have investigated all the reports, and our findings affirmed the terrible decisions Mr. Obaseki has implemented and still planning to implement at the twilight of his government.

“Of note is his unilateral decision to convert hundreds of his former political aides and others who were his personal staff in Afrinvest Company, into the Edo State Civil Service.

“In doing so, Mr. Obaseki discountenanced the established statutory requirement for civil service rule by refusing to declare vacancy and usurping the role of Edo State Civil Service Commission.

“In the light of these worrisome discoveries, we hereby put Edo people on notice that Obaseki’s decision to fill the State Civil Service workforce with his cronies, is a violation of his oath of office and act of economic sabotage.

“Also, in his manner to create industrial dispute for the incoming administration, Obaseki has empanelled a sinister body to work out a new minimum wage of ₦85,000 for workers in the state, despite the open fact that he has been unable to fully implement the ₦70,000 approved by the APC-led Federal Government of Nigeria.

“The revelations that have emerged in the public knowledge from the ongoing investigation of key officers in Obaseki’s administration by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), points to the fact that Obaseki has mortgaged the state to his business partners.

“His hurried choreographed commissioning of uncompleted projects in Benin City is his attempt to justify the inflated contract sums and siphoning of the state resources through phony projects.

“Edo people must join hands at this critical time to save whatever is left of our Commonwealth”.
