In a major political development ahead of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) 2025 National Convention, Northern stakeholders of the party have officially endorsed Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, senior advocate of Nigeria, SAN, former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, as the consensus candidate for National Chairman.
The endorsement came after a high-level meeting of Northern PDP leaders in Abuja where extensive consultations produced a unanimous agreement to present Turaki as the North’s unified choice.
The move is seen as a strategic step to strengthen internal unity and prepare the opposition party for a decisive return to national relevance.
According to reports, the chairmanship position was zoned to the North-West geopolitical zone in a bid to ensure regional balance and foster inclusiveness within the party structure.
The endorsement positions Turaki — a seasoned lawyer, politician, and former presidential aspirant — as a bridge-builder capable of reconciling diverse interests and leading the PDP into the 2025 general elections with renewed vigor.
The party’s elective national convention is scheduled to take place on November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State, where delegates from across the country will formally elect new national officers.
Political analysts say Turaki’s endorsement could mark the beginning of a new chapter for the PDP, signaling a collective effort to unify the party’s Northern bloc and consolidate its position as Nigeria’s main opposition force.
