There seems to be no respite yet for Nigerian manufacturers, especially brewers of herbal drinks whose trade has come under attack by imitators. That is why, when recently, Paul Orhii, director-general, National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control, NAFDAC, alerted the nation that the agency would soon clamp down on unregistered herbal drinks, many genuine producers of the products heaved a sigh of relief. But that appears to be taking too long and nothing seems to be happening.
When the agency arrested Henry and Ekene Ezeani, two brothers, in connection with illegal manufacturing and sales of “The Prince Alomo-Bitters,” an unregistered alcoholic beverage, in Lagos, many stakeholders in the business thought that the huge market they were losing to fake drink producers was coming to an end. For instance, Ghana based Kasapreko Company Limited, manufacturer of Alomo Bitters, lost about 40 per cent of its market share to fake products. It had to suspend its plan to build a N10 billion factory in Nigeria. Though, Kwabena Adjei, group-managing director of the company, admitted that Nigeria is one of the largest markets for its popular Alomo Bitters, he lamented that the threats from counterfeiting has reduced the brand equity of Alomo Bitters …
