The dismal performance of the Cameroonian national team has saddened many Cameroonians here in Brazil. Three defeats against Mexico, Croatia and Brazil ensured that Cameroon finished bottom of group A, one of the worst records ever by an African side at the World Cup finals.
Before the Brazil 2014 World Cup got underway, Cameroon was one of the African teams tipped by some analysts to progress from its group, but that proved to be an uphill task for the Indomitable Lions, leaving their fans around the world unhappy.
On the day Cameroon confronted Brazil, many Cameroonians in Sao Paolo had expected their team to redeem themselves with a good showing against the host nation but that never happened as the Africans crumbled 1–4, making their countrymen the butt of jokes among Africans here in Sao Paolo.
Wilson Tama, a Cameroonian from Bamanda, told the magazine that he was terribly disappointed by the performance of his native country in his host country and hence his low spirit that Tuesday night. “What do you expect of me, with such display,” he asked, rather ruefully.
He went on to lament that the problem with Cameroon’s national team is the division in it, which even manifests in fans taking sides with individual players to the detriment of the team.
