The Senate this morning votes against the controversial sale of national assets when it rejected an item on the report of a committee on the issue.
A post on the Senate Twitter handle quotes Ali Ndume, the Senate leader of saying “The Senate oppose the sale of National Assets to shore up Foreign Reserves.”
Since the issue was thrown open by cabinet members and supported by some prominent people in the private sector and Bukola Saraki, the senate president, many people have joined the debate, for and against. While some feel that officials are right to want to fight recession with proceeds of the sales, though some of them express reservations over sincerity , others opposed it. One of the latter group is Chukwuma Soludo, erstwhile governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN. Soludo is of the opinion that the economic crisis in the country has not got to the level where the sale of assets, which according to him should be a last resort, should be considered. Rather he said that such an exercise now will only give an undue opportunity to some wealthy people in the country.
