Score Card of President Jonathan's Transformation Agenda - TELL Magazine

Score Card of President Jonathan’s Transformation Agenda

By May 29, 2014, President Goodluck Jonathan would be three years old in office, which means the administration has barely a year to go in this term.

On assumption of office, President Jonathan unveiled his Transformation Agenda. The Agenda, a comprehensive layout of Mr President’s goals and targets will invariably be the basic parameter by which the administration’s success or failure will be established.

It is therefore necessary to take stock and find out how much of the transformation has been achieved. For example, it lists under the enablers to sustainable growth and development section, the elimination of immigration bottlenecks, improving security of lives and property, 48 hours clearance of goods at the ports as part of measures that will be put in place. Is it happening? Where are we on the transformation journey? As part of entrenching democratic values, Nigerians demand accountability from leaders from time to time.

Beginning this week, TELL, Nigeria’s leading and most authoritative news magazine also known as the People’s Parliament will begin a series of special reports geared towards assessing the performance of President Jonathan’s Transformation Agenda.

This we will do by showcasing the achievements of Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, of the Federal Government, which are the organs for implementing the Agenda vis-à-vis their mandate, the performance contract signed by their helmsmen with government and the key performance indicators as stated in the contract. Where possible, we will interview the Ministers or heads of agencies in order to present you with first-hand, hands-on information.

Starting off the series are:

  1. The Ministry of Interior and
  2. The Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, FMBN.

The Ministry of Interior currently headed by Comrade Abba Moro is a very strategic ministry that supervises such important services as Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigerian Prisons Service, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps and Federal Fire Service. We spoke with the Honourable Minister who provided great insights into the progress made by the ministry as well as the challenges militating against their optimum performance. Its role in maintaining internal security as well as citizenship integrity cannot be overemphasised.

One sector that has been crying for attention is the housing sector and the FMBN has a major role to play in bridging the huge housing deficit which has been put at 16 million. There is no doubt that the bank, under Gimba Yau Kumo, its Managing Director and Chief Bisi Ogunjobi, the Chairman, have done quite a lot in repositioning the banking, in collaborating with stakeholders to bring vibrancy to the sector and in the direct provision of houses.

We will be reporting on other MDAs in subsequent editions as we mark the end of the third year of President Jonathan’s Transformation Agenda.

Enjoy the report.
