Profile Of The Man: Abba Patrick Francis Moro - TELL Magazine

Profile Of The Man: Abba Patrick Francis Moro

Born to the family of Chief Moro Agbamu of Okwungaga, Ugbokolo District of Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State, Comrade Abba Moro as he is fondly called, began his formal education at LGEA Special Primary School, Odessassa, Ugbokolo where he finished from in 1969 before proceeding in the same year to Emmanuel Secondary School, Ugbokolo. His outstanding performance in the 1974 WASC Exams helped him secure a place at the Federal Government College, Kano for his Higher School Certificate which he successfully concluded in 1976.

He bagged his first degree, B.Sc in Political Science, from the renowned University of Lagos in 1980, following it up immediately after his mandatory one year National service with a Master of Public Administration degree from the same university. Not done with academic pursuit, he also added a Master of Science in Public Administration from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Moro’s working and political career is a fascinating story of hard work, determination, exemplary service to humanity and success in every assignment. From Legislative Assistant in the Second National Assembly (1981) to Lecturer, Benue State Polytechnic, Ugbokolo (1983-1991); Head of Department, General Studies (1991-1992); Head, Department of Public Administrative Studies (1994-1996) his achievement speaks for itself. It is remarkable that Moro became pioneer Chairman, Governing Board of the College of Education, Oju from 1991-1993 while he was still in the employ of the Benue Polytechnic. As a unionist and activist, he was at various times National Secretary General of National Association of Political Science Students, NAPSS; Chairman, Benue Polytechnic Senior Staff Association; Deputy National President and National President of the Polytechnic Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, POSSAN.

His desire to serve humanity at a larger scale saw him leaving his first love, the academia, for the murky waters of politics where he has also made tremendous impact. After three failed attempts, he finally won the chairmanship seat of the Okpokwu Local Government Council in 1998, a position he occupied for seven years. As chairman he conceptualised and executed a lot of people-centred programmes and projects which not only earned him the appellation “People’s chairman” but numerous awards, including but not limited to, Local Government Chairman of the Year 2000 by ADI; Most Prudent LG Chairman of the Year 2001 by Commercial and Policy Development Council, Lagos State; Distinguished Service Award by Rotary International District 9120. He also has a string of chieftaincy titles in his honour.

Comrade Moro served as Pro-Chancellor/Chairman, Governing Council, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State from February 2008 to August 2009 and also served in the capacity at the Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi, Benue State from August 2009 to 2011.

He is well known and respected as a grassroots  politician who commands the love and support of a large followership in his native Benue State. This political base came in handy when the responsibility of coordinating the 2007 PDP Presidential Campaign (Benue State) was thrust upon him as well as when he was appointed the Director-General of Senator David Mark’s re-election campaign in 2011. Easily approachable, he is at home with his local folk as he is comfortable with the high and mighty.

He was appointed Honourable Minister of Interior in 2011 and his wealth of experience has stood him in good stead especially considering the magnitude of security challenges that Nigeria has been confronted with in the last few years.

Keen watchers say that Comrade Moro has the intellectual capacity, commensurate experience and political sagacity to make a success of his current assignment for the benefit of the nation and generality of Nigerians. He is happily married with children.
